Hypertension

I have hypertension.

It was a total surprise to me when I was diagnosed with it about 15 years ago. I had and still have a healthy lifestyle. I don’t  smoke, I eat right, watch my salt intake, exercise regularly, have my stressors under control and have a normal BMI. So why do I have hypertension?

In my case, I blame it on genetics. My father died of a stroke. He did not see his doctor regularly and did not take care of his health. He did not have an active life style and was obese. I was not able to intervene at that time as I was not educated in healthcare. I wish I had known then what I know now. I might have been able to help him have a longer, healthier and more productive life.

Although I can’t help my father anymore, I’m writing this to help you or your loved one. You are reading this, so that tells me that you are interested in learning more about hypertension and how to prevent it control it or reverse it.

What is Hypertension

Hypertension is a common condition in which blood flows through blood vessels and arteries with greater than normal pressure. It is sometimes called the “silent killer" because many people are unaware that they have high blood pressure until they have a severe medical event such as a heart attack or stroke.

Prevention

I wasn’t able to prevent my hypertension but I am controlling it with medication prescribed to me by my primary care physician and through nutritional supplements. I am also active, limit my salt intake, and eat a healthy whole foods/plant based diet. I will discuss my eating plan in more detail later in this website.

Treatment

A healthy diet, physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight are the first, and sometimes, the most important part of hypertension treatment. However, when those are not enough to maintain your blood pressure levels, your doctor can decide which medications will work best for you.

Along with medications, many people are interested in using natural supplements to help improve their blood pressure, either along with blood pressure medication or to avoid taking these medications altogether. You should always check with your doctor before starting any supplement to treat high blood pressure.

That said, a number of supplements, combined with prescribed medication, have shown promise as hypertension treatments. These include the following.
